Lower Tor is a granite stack on the Okehampton Common side of Belstone, lower down the hill from Higher Tor and smaller than it. It stands about 451 metres above sea level and looks out over the northern moor, from Yes Tor in the west to Cosdon Hill in the east, with High Willhays also in view. It is one of a line of tors that runs from Oke Tor through Knattaborough Tor and Higher Tor to Lower Tor and Tors End Tor, with Belstone Tor the highest point on the chain.

The Belstone and Okehampton boundary stones stand a short way to the south of the tor, and the Okehampton firing range lies right beside it, so check the firing times and look for red flags before you go. The easiest approach is from Belstone village, over Watchet Hill and Belstone Tor.

The name is not unique: Crossing's Guide to Dartmoor mentions another Lower Tor, marked by a post, near Lower Uppacott on the other side of the moor. This listing is the Okehampton one.

Go deeper with Dartefacts

Dartefacts is a database of Dartmoor sites with far more close-up detail than we can show here, and it is the best place to go deeper. Dartefacts is free to use, and nobody has to pay to look things up. If you want more, a yearly subscription adds 10-figure grid references, map zoom down to 1:25,000 and lists to tick off the places you have visited, and it helps keep the site going. We would encourage you to subscribe.
