Okehampton
Okehampton is a town on the northern edge of Dartmoor. The first written record is from 980 as Ocmundtune, and the Domesday Book of 1086 has it as Ochementone. A market charter came in 1234. The 2021 census counted 7,309 people. The White Hart Inn has been licensed since 1623 and the Town Hall dates from 1685. The A30 was moved to bypass the town in 1988.
Okehampton Castle was built between 1068 and 1086 by Baldwin of Meulles, sheriff of Devon. The Courtenays gained it when Reginald Courtenay married Hawisia, a descendant of Baldwin, and began major building by 1190. Hugh Courtenay II (1276 to 1340) doubled the footprint of the Norman keep and turned it into a mansion. After the Exeter Conspiracy of 1538 the Crown seized Henry Courtenay's lands, and Sir Peter Carew received the hunting park in 1544 and probably began stripping the castle. English Heritage now looks after it. All Saints church has Saxon origins, was rebuilt in 1447 and was almost destroyed by fire in 1842.
The Museum of Dartmoor Life began as a charitable trust in 1978 and opened in 1981 in a former mill and warehouse around a cobbled courtyard, with a waterwheel. Simmons Park was opened on 8 July 1907 by the Lord Mayor of London, on land given to the town by the Okehampton-born businessman Sydney Simmons (1840 to 1924). Passenger trains stopped in 1972, and the Dartmoor Line to Exeter reopened in November 2021.
