Throwleigh

Throwleigh is a village and civil parish in West Devon, three miles from Chagford and six from Okehampton, on the north eastern edge of the moor. The parish takes in the village and the hamlets of Wonson, Providence and Murchington. Wikipedia gives 298 people in the 2001 census and about 350 including the hamlets. Throwleigh no longer has any shops.

For most of its history the village was the church, the Church House, the Rectory, the Barton (the manor farm) and a few cottages, built mostly of granite. The first recorded rector of St Mary the Virgin was in 1248. The church is late 13th or early 14th century in origin, with most of the present building from the 15th. It has a priest's doorway made of four large granite blocks, a wagon roof with carved bosses including a green man and three hares with conjoined ears, and an Easter Sepulchre in the north chancel. The church also hosts a sub-post office twice a week.

Providence Chapel was built in 1839 as a Bible Christian chapel, said to have been paid for by R. D. Gay of Providence Place. It later became Methodist, is Grade II listed and is still open. Wonson has the Northmore Arms and the village hall, built in 1949 from a wartime Nissen hut. The parish website lists a fete, a community cafe and Beating the Bounds among its events.
