Moretonhampstead
Moretonhampstead is a market town on the north-eastern edge of Dartmoor, inside the National Park. It began as a Saxon settlement, dated variously to about 682 or 700 AD, and was the main settlement of a large estate between the rivers Teign and Bovey. The name was Moretone, 'moor town', and 'hampstead' (homestead) was added by the 15th century to tell it from other Moretons. By 1086 the manor and its neighbours supported more than five thousand sheep.
In 1207 King John granted a weekly market and an annual fair. The rent was one sparrowhawk a year, and the bird is now the town's symbol. Wool dominated the local economy for over seven centuries and declined in the late 17th century. St Andrew's church is of about 1450 and was restored in the Victorian period. The granite almshouses are Grade I listed and carry the datestone 1637, but they stand on or near the site of a medieval hospital of about 1450 and are thought to be at least two hundred years older than the stone. They have an 11-bay arcaded loggia. The National Trust bought them in 1952.
The Cross Tree, once a clipped elm and now a beech, appears in R. D. Blackmore's novel Christowell, and was where young people gathered to dance. George Parker Bidder, the 'calculating boy' who became a railway engineer, was born in the town in June 1806, the son of a stonemason. Fires in the 20th century destroyed many old buildings, but the town is a conservation area.
