Experimen Tor
A pun on Dartmoor's tors, and on the software kind. This corner of the site is where half-built ideas get to come out and play before they're finished, polished, or even properly decided on. Nothing here is final. Have a poke around, and if something's broken, brilliant (we need to break it to fix it), or you've got a idea of your own, let me know.
Why show you the mess?
Most of what we build happens behind the scenes until it's ready. Experimen Tor is the opposite: a standing invite to watch things develop, try them while they're rough, and shape what we build next. Everything below is a genuine work in progress.
Hound Tor: sun & azimuth
Basically a clever way to look at where the sun will be on any given day - I've chosen Hound Tor as our example spot because it's a popular spot, we've tried to keep the file size down (hench the not great map) - I can always post the other version - but it takes longer to load and just looks better - it also doesn't show shadows quite as well.
A real 1-metre LIDAR terrain model of Hound Tor. Scrub the time and date to see exactly where the sun sits, in real compass degrees, over the rocks. This is built for planning a shoot or a walk around golden hour.
The Apple Crusher, Sourton - in 3D
I got into photogrammetry a while ago and although it's a brilliant way for people to "see" things on the moor they might never actually reach, I couldn't (until now) see a use for the idea!
I've got scans like this of Bleak House and Branscombe Loaf (amongst others) but the models need tidying up before I can use them here.
A photogrammetry scan: hundreds of overlapping photographs stitched into a full 3D model you can rotate and zoom in your browser. A first look at bringing more of Dartmoor's features onto the site this way.
