Tavistock
Tavistock is a market town and civil parish in West Devon, on the River Tavy on the western side of the moor, about 12 miles north of Plymouth. The 2021 census counted 12,675 people. Domesday Book (1086) lists the town's estate as held by the abbey, with 79 households, a mill and woodland.
Tavistock Abbey was founded in 961 by Ordgar, Earl of Devon. The abbey was dissolved in 1539 (one source gives 1540), and its lands passed to John Russell, 1st Earl of Bedford. Some ruins survive by the river, including cloister arches and a still house. Henry I granted the monks a charter in 1105 for a weekly market, and the Pannier Market still runs on Fridays. The present market building was finished in 1860. Tavistock became one of Devon's four stannary towns in 1305, and a canal opened in 1817 to serve the copper mines.
The Goose Fair is held on the second Wednesday in October. Its start is uncertain: one account gives 1116, while a local page says the exact date is unknown and links it to the market charter of 1105, confirmed in 1116. Sir Francis Drake was born near the town in the early 1540s (sources give 1540 or 1542). The Russell family paid for many public buildings and statues in the 19th century, and the Gothic Town Hall by Edward Rundle dates from 1864. In 2006 the town became part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.

Liberator crash at Plaster Down, Fullamoor Farm
