Horrabridge

Horrabridge grew around its bridge over the River Walkham, on the western edge of the moor between Tavistock and Yelverton. The bridge is medieval in origin and carried an important route across the river, and the village that gathered around it made its living from the crossing, from farming and later from the mines that worked the copper and tin of the Tavistock area. It is a working village rather than a picture postcard one, with a good deal of ordinary life going on in it.

The Walkham valley here is wooded and attractive, and the village gives easy access to some fine country. The old railway line between Tavistock and Plymouth crossed the valley nearby on the great Walkham viaduct, and the route now forms part of the Drake's Trail cycle path, one of the best traffic free rides in Devon. Upstream the Walkham runs down off the open moor past Merrivale, where the prehistoric stone rows and settlement are among the most impressive and accessible on Dartmoor.
