Yelverton
Yelverton is a large village on the south-western edge of Dartmoor, in the civil parish of Buckland Monachorum, West Devon. The 2021 census counted 1,858 residents. A story says the name came from a railway official misreading "Elfordtown" in 1859, but Britain Express calls that probably apocryphal.
The railway shaped it. The line from Plymouth to Tavistock reached the village in 1859 and made it a practical home for people working in Plymouth. Yelverton station opened on 1 May 1885 as the junction for the Princetown branch, which closed on 5 March 1956. The station itself closed to passengers on 31 December 1962. The Plym Valley Railway has since reopened a section of the old line nearer Plymouth.
St Paul's church began as a wooden building of 1891. The present stone church was built between 1910 and 1912, after the Bayly sisters gave land and money, and is grade II listed. A plane once hit its tower, and a warning light was fitted afterwards.
RAF Harrowbeer opened on 15 August 1941 on the edge of the village. No 276 Squadron, flying air-sea rescue, had its headquarters there from October 1941 to April 1944. It closed as a Fighter Command station on 13 May 1946, and some dispersal bays can still be seen. On 2 August 1945 President Truman, flying home from the Potsdam Conference, landed there after fog closed his planned airfield at St Mawgan.

On Sunday 28 May 1944 a Hawker Typhoon of 263 Squadron clipped the tower of St Paul's Church, Yelverton, during a service and crashed in the fields below. The pilot was killed.
