Walkhampton

Walkhampton lies on the south western moor between Yelverton and Princetown, an old parish whose church stands apart from the village on a hill, its tower a landmark for miles around and a marker for those crossing the moor. The village itself is a quiet cluster of houses and an inn, and the church house beside the churchyard is a reminder of how much community life once revolved around the parish. The parish stretches a long way onto the open moor, taking in a good deal of hard, high country.

Burrator Reservoir lies just to the east, and Walkhampton is a natural starting point for walks around its wooded shores or up onto Sharpitor, Leather Tor and Down Tor, where one of the finest stone rows on Dartmoor runs across the hillside. The Devonport Leat, cut in the eighteenth century to carry water off the moor to the naval dockyard, passes close by and makes an easy and interesting walk in itself. The old Princetown railway also crosses this ground, and its bed offers a gentle route onto the high moor.
