Privacy & Cookies
Our Dartmoor is a passion project that gathers together information about Dartmoor: its businesses, its heritage, its landscape and its stories. We care about your privacy and we try to collect as little personal information as we possibly can. This page explains what we do collect, why, and what your rights are.
In short: we do not use advertising or analytics trackers, we do not sell your data to anyone, and the only cookie the website itself sets is the one that lets it work.
Who we are
Our Dartmoor ("we", "us", "our") is the website at ourdartmoor.co.uk. For the purposes of UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018), the data controller is Paul Glavind Harris aka Our Dartmoor.
If you have any questions about this policy or your information, you can contact us at
The information we collect
Information you give us
When you choose to send us something through the website, we collect what you put in the form. Depending on which form you use, that may include:
- Contact and enquiry messages - your name, email address and your message.
- Suggesting a listing - the details you provide about a place or business, and any contact details you give us so we can follow up.
- Suggesting an edit to an existing listing - the correction you send and, optionally, your contact details.
- Kind Words (reviews and testimonials) - the name you choose to display and the words you write.
You do not have to give us any of this. It is only collected when you decide to get in touch.
Information collected automatically
Like almost all websites, our web server keeps standard technical logs when a page is requested. These may include your IP address, browser type, and the pages you visited. This is used to keep the site secure and working, and to diagnose problems. We do not use this information to identify or profile individual visitors.
Business and place listings
Our directory contains information about Dartmoor businesses, organisations, heritage sites and other places. Some of this is drawn from publicly available sources. Where a listing includes personal information (for example a sole trader's name or contact details), please see "If you are listed in our directory" below.
How we use your information, and our lawful basis
| What for | Lawful basis (UK GDPR Article 6) |
|---|---|
| Replying to your message or enquiry | Consent, and our legitimate interest in responding to you |
| Reviewing a listing or edit you suggest | Consent, and our legitimate interest in running an accurate directory |
| Displaying a Kind Word you submit | Consent (you can ask us to remove it at any time) |
| Keeping the website secure and working (server logs) | Our legitimate interest in security and reliability |
| Listing businesses and places in the directory | Our legitimate interest in providing a public community resource |
We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not carry out automated decision-making or profiling.
Cookies and similar technologies
A cookie is a small file a website can store in your browser. We keep these to a minimum.
Strictly necessary cookies
The website sets a single session cookie. This is what allows the site to function correctly as you move between pages (for example remembering a form you are part-way through). It contains no advertising or tracking information and is deleted when you close your browser or after a period of inactivity. Under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), strictly necessary cookies like this do not require your consent, but we tell you about them here for transparency.
Content from other websites (embedded media and maps)
Some pages include content served by other companies, and when that content loads your browser connects to them directly. Specifically:
- Embedded videos. Some listings include videos from YouTube (using its privacy-enhanced "no-cookie" mode), Vimeo, TikTok, Instagram or Facebook. When a video loads or is played, that provider may set its own cookies and receive your IP address, under its own privacy policy.
- Maps. Our map pages load map tiles from OpenStreetMap and OpenTopoMap, and the map search uses OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service. These receive your IP address in order to send the map images, but do not set advertising cookies.
- Links to social media and Google Maps directions are ordinary links. Nothing loads from those services unless you click through to them.
You can control or block cookies through your browser settings. Blocking third-party content may stop some videos or map features from working. For more on how these providers use data, please see their own privacy policies.
Who we share your information with
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for marketing. We do rely on a small number of trusted service providers ("processors") to run the site:
- Our web hosting provider, which stores the website and its database on our behalf.
- Google Workspace, which we use for our ourdartmoor.co.uk email, so any message you send us is stored in that email account.
We may also disclose information if we are required to do so by law.
International transfers
Some of our providers (such as Google) may process data outside the UK. Where that happens, it is protected by appropriate safeguards recognised under UK data protection law, such as the UK's adequacy regulations or standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep your information
We keep the messages and submissions you send us only for as long as we need them to deal with your enquiry and keep a reasonable record, and no longer than necessary. Kind Words remain published until you ask us to remove them. Server logs are kept only for a short period for security and troubleshooting. You can ask us to delete your information at any time (see your rights below).
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct information that is wrong or incomplete;
- ask us to delete your information;
- ask us to restrict or object to how we use it;
- ask us to provide your information in a portable format; and
- withdraw your consent at any time, where we relied on consent.
To exercise any of these, please email
If you are listed in our directory
If you are a business, organisation or individual listed on Our Dartmoor and you would like your listing changed or removed, please use the "Suggest an edit" link on your listing, or email us. We will always act on a reasonable request to correct or remove a listing.
Children
Our Dartmoor is a general-interest website and is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Links to other websites
Our directory and articles link to many other websites. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of those sites, and we encourage you to read their own privacy policies.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page.
