Village cross, Moretonhampstead

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1020872) describes a village cross in Cross Street, Moretonhampstead, just outside the churchyard of St Andrew's Church. It is an octagonal pedestal 0.6 metres high and 3.2 metres across, with an upper part of ashlared granite blocks 1.2 metres long each, and a cross head set on it. A large beech tree grows inside the pedestal. The cross head is 0.7 metres wide and 0.62 metres high, with every face chamfered. It has been set on the pedestal upside down, and a round hole in the top, 0.17 metres across and 0.1 metres deep, is the socket for the shaft, now lost. In the middle of the west face is a T-shaped recess 0.26 metres wide by 0.28 metres high and 0.03 metres deep, and on the east face a rectangular recess 0.23 metres high by 0.1 metres wide and 0.03 metres deep. It lies in the parish of Moretonhampstead, about 2.6 km north-east of North Bovey.
