Burham Farm socket stone (possible base of Yennadon Cross)

Dousland, Devon

Grid ref: SX 5396 6917

Part of Dousland →

  • Position: Approximate: the lane entrance to Burham Farm, about 600 yards down the road to Dousland from Yennadon Cross
  • Yennadon Cross: Grade II, list entry 1253492, first listed 21 January 1988 as Cross at SX 545694
  • Foundation deed: Buckland Abbey, 1280, names the Yanedone Cross as a boundary mark

Dartmoor Explorations says a socket stone, likely the original base of Yennadon Cross, lies about 600 yards along the road towards Dousland at the entrance to the lane to Burham Farm, and a Dartmoor CAM caption says the cross was probably not set in its original socket. The stone's exact position and measurements are not given in any source read here, and the farm land is private, so it is best looked for from the road.

Crossing described in 1902 a rectangular holed stone in a hedge near a gateway on the road from Dousland to Princetown, three feet by two and a half, with a square hole fifteen inches by twelve, probably a cross socket stone, and he expected a cross at that point where the Cornwood and Plympton to Sampford Spiney track crossed the Buckland to Buckfast route. His addendum adds worked stones at the farm, one of them looking like part of a cross shaft used as a gatepost, and suggests it may be part of the Yanedone Cross with the holed stone as its socket. These may not be the same stone as the one meant today.

Yennadon Cross itself is a small granite Latin cross with its right arm destroyed and an incised cross on its face. It was built into a wall at Burnham Farm before 1974, when it was set up again on Yennadon Down, close to where the 1280 foundation deed of Buckland Abbey places a boundary cross.
