Postbridge Cross (Maggie Cross)

Postbridge, Devon

Grid ref: SX 6516 7922

Part of Postbridge →

  • Grid reference: SX 65167 79217
  • Also called: Maggie Cross, St Margaret's Cross
  • Devon HER: MDV7392 (as quoted by Geograph and the Milestone Society)
  • Milestone Society ID: DVWD_DAM13

Only the head of the cross survives, set into the wall beside the B3212 at Stannon Lodge, opposite the chapel in Postbridge. The Megalithic Portal gives an early medieval date and says it is thought to have stood at a nearby junction marking an old track across the moor, before the main road was made.

William Crossing wrote in 1902 that a cross had stood close to the lodge gate beside the cottage intended as a lodge to Stannon House, but that nobody then remembered it. The Dartmoor poet Jonas Coaker, who died in 1890, called it Maggie Cross and could not say what had become of it. Crossing also quotes Bray's Journal noting a cross near the bridge at Postbridge, and says the Meripit Hill cross had been moved to Postbridge and used as a gatepost, which he could not trace.
