Postbridge

Postbridge sits in the heart of the moor where the road from Moretonhampstead to Tavistock crosses the East Dart. The hamlet is famous for its clapper bridge, a medieval crossing built from great slabs of granite resting on stone piers, worn smooth by centuries of packhorses and weather. It is the largest and best preserved of Dartmoor's clapper bridges and one of the most photographed sights on the moor. The name itself records the crossing, and the settlement grew slowly around it as traffic moved tin, wool and peat across the high ground.

The hamlet is a fine base for walking into some of the emptiest country in southern England. The East Dart can be followed upstream past Bellever and out towards the waterfall, while the surrounding moor is scattered with hut circles, reaves and the remains of tin working. Bellever Forest lies close by, and the Warren House Inn, one of the highest pubs in England, stands a short distance along the road. There is a National Park information point in the hamlet, and the clapper bridge itself remains the reason most people stop.
