Postbridge

Postbridge is a hamlet on the East Dart river, on the B3212 between Princetown and Moretonhampstead. It has a few houses, a shop, a pub and hotel, and a national park information centre.

The clapper bridge is the best known thing there, and Britain Express links the village name to it, since large stone slabs were locally called posts. Four granite slabs sit on three piers, with a total span of over 42 feet. It is medieval, put at the 13th century in most accounts and possibly the 12th in one. The first written record is disputed: Wikipedia says the 14th century, Britain Express says 1655. It carried packhorses taking tin towards Tavistock. In the 19th century a farmer damaged it and a slab ended up in the river bed; it was put back in 1879. The bridge is Grade II* listed. A second bridge for carts was built in the 1780s alongside it and is Grade II.

The Warren House Inn is about two miles north east of the hamlet, at 1,425 feet (434 m), and is called the highest pub in southern England. It was built to serve tin miners from the Golden Dagger, Vitifer and Birch Tor mines, and the last of them closed in the early 1930s. An earlier house, known as the New House, burned down and the present inn dates from 1845, on the opposite side of the road. The pub takes its name from the nearby rabbit warrens. The story that its fire has burned since 1845 is local legend and cannot be checked.
