Our Purpose

The Museum of Dartmoor Life exists to provide opportunities for visitors, volunteers and members of the local community to learn about and enjoy the cultural and natural heritage of Dartmoor and the surrounding area.

Our Vision

To be the primary gateway to exploring Dartmoor, its history and people.

Our Mission

To collect, conserve and interpret artefacts and stories relating to Dartmoor, its history and people, and to engage with visitors and the local community to inspire diverse audiences and future generations to love and protect the Moor and its heritage.

The museum's own history says it was founded by John Young and the Okehampton and District Museum Association, and that Alan Endacott donated the first collection when it opened on 4 July 1981. The Dartmoor Society describes him as its founder and first curator.

Go deeper with Dartefacts

Dartefacts is a database of Dartmoor sites with far more close-up detail than we can show here, and it is the best place to go deeper. Dartefacts is free to use, and nobody has to pay to look things up. If you want more, a yearly subscription adds 10-figure grid references, map zoom down to 1:25,000 and lists to tick off the places you have visited, and it helps keep the site going. We would encourage you to subscribe.
