Nestled on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park, Okehampton is one of Devon's oldest market towns and has served as the principal gateway to the wild landscapes of northern Dartmoor for centuries. Its origins date back to Saxon times, with the settlement developing around a strategic crossing of the River Okement. Following the Norman Conquest, Okehampton Castle was built in the late 11th century to command the surrounding countryside and protect the route across Devon. The castle grew into one of the largest Norman fortifications in the county before falling into decline during the Tudor period. Throughout the medieval era, Okehampton prospered as a market town, trading wool, livestock and agricultural produce from the rich farmland surrounding Dartmoor, while later centuries saw quarrying, mining and rail transport become important parts of the local economy.

Today, Okehampton is a thriving market town that successfully blends its historic character with modern amenities. Visitors can explore the impressive ruins of Okehampton Castle, enjoy scenic walks along the River Okement and discover the history of Dartmoor at the Museum of Dartmoor Life, which tells the story of the people, industries and traditions of the moor. The town is also home to the beautifully restored Dartmoor Line railway, reconnecting Okehampton with Exeter and making it easier than ever for visitors to reach Dartmoor by train. Independent shops, cafés, traditional pubs and a regular pannier market give the town a welcoming atmosphere, while Simmons Park provides attractive riverside gardens and recreational space in the heart of the town.

Okehampton is widely regarded as the northern gateway to Dartmoor and is an excellent base for exploring the national park. A network of footpaths and cycle routes radiate from the town onto the open moor, leading to landmarks such as Yes Tor, the highest point in Devon, and High Willhays, as well as dramatic granite tors, ancient stone circles and hidden wooded valleys. The town also hosts a variety of annual events, including agricultural shows, food festivals and community markets, celebrating the area's rich farming heritage and strong local identity. Combining a fascinating history, excellent visitor facilities and unrivalled access to Dartmoor's spectacular landscapes, Okehampton remains one of Devon's most attractive destinations for walkers, cyclists, history enthusiasts and families alike.
