The West Devon Way keeps to the softer country along Dartmoor's western flank, linking Okehampton in the north with Plymouth in the south. On the way it passes through Lydford, with its gorge and castle, and the stannary town of Tavistock. It makes a gentler counterpoint to the high crossings of the open moor.
