Samuel Rowe

Crediton, Devon

Samuel Rowe was born on 11 November 1793 at Brixton, Devon, the second son of a freeholding farmer. He was apprenticed to a Kingsbridge bookseller in 1810 and ran a Plymouth bookshop from 1813. He matriculated at Jesus College, Cambridge in 1822 and was ordained in 1824.

He became vicar of Crediton in 1835 and died there on 15 September 1853. His A Perambulation of the Antient and Royal Forest of Dartmoor (1848) came from fieldwork in 1827-28. It was reprinted in 1856 and revised in 1895-96 by his nephew J. Brooking Rowe.
