Little Sharpitor is a small granite outcrop at 395 m in Walkhampton parish, standing about 100 m below Sharpitor to its north-east. It is a separate outlier with a clear gap between the two, a single compact outcrop of cracked granite that faces downhill. It sits among the loose rock of its larger neighbour, which may be why it went unrecognised for so long. The name is a recent label, coined by Rob Naylor on the Dartefacts website.

The rocks lie on land the Dartmoor Preservation Association bought in February 1984, about 30 acres, to protect them from development. The wartime transmitting station of RAF Sharpitor on nearby Peek Hill had been abandoned, a 1956 plan to rebuild it for the Gee radio navigation system came to nothing, and a reform school proposed for the site was refused at a public inquiry in 1973. The association marked its land with five small boundary stones carrying its initials, and one stands near the rocks.

Leather Tor rises to the south, and the car parks on the B3212 are the usual starting point. Little Sharpitor is not a second Sharpitor. It belongs to the Sharpitor at Burrator, which has its own listing.

Go deeper with Dartefacts

Dartefacts is a database of Dartmoor sites with far more close-up detail than we can show here, and it is the best place to go deeper. Dartefacts is free to use, and nobody has to pay to look things up. If you want more, a yearly subscription adds 10-figure grid references, map zoom down to 1:25,000 and lists to tick off the places you have visited, and it helps keep the site going. We would encourage you to subscribe.
