Observation Post 22 was built by W. J. Avery to a War Office order dated 17 September 1923 and finished in March 1924, as a post for 16 officers under instruction. It stands beside the car park near East Okement Farm, with Hart Tor just to the north, and has a commanding view to the south. Dartefacts calls it the best preserved and the largest of the range's posts.

It is also the only one still in regular use. The army now uses it for range control and as a shelter for the stock clearer, and a dividing wall inside makes separate office and stable space. In September 1998 it was faced with granite by an army engineer unit (511 STRE), and a further window was added in March 2002.

The post is inside the Okehampton live-firing area. Check the firing programme and the flags before you go, and keep out when firing is on. The other posts, and the history of the range, are on the Okehampton Range page.

Go deeper with Dartefacts

Dartefacts is a database of Dartmoor sites with far more close-up detail than we can show here, and it is the best place to go deeper. Dartefacts is free to use, and nobody has to pay to look things up. If you want more, a yearly subscription adds 10-figure grid references, map zoom down to 1:25,000 and lists to tick off the places you have visited, and it helps keep the site going. We would encourage you to subscribe.
