Okehampton Artillery Range: Observation Post 16 and flanking target butts

Observation Post 16 and its flanking target butts are remnants of military training on Dartmoor during the First World War. The observation post would have been used to direct fire onto the target butts, allowing gunners to practise their aim on this remote stretch of moorland. Such installations were common across Dartmoor during the war years, when the open landscape and sparse population made it ideal for artillery work.
Today the earthworks remain visible on the moor, modest but distinct traces of a time when Dartmoor served the nation's defence. They sit within the wider story of the Artillery Range itself, which has shaped this corner of the moor for over a century. Walkers crossing this ground can still read the landscape's military past in its banks and depressions.
