This scheduled monument preserves the physical evidence of Okehampton Artillery Range, a training facility established during the First World War on the open moorland north of Okehampton. The site includes Observation Post 6 and the structures associated with an incline target carrier railway, an experimental system designed to move targets across the steep terrain for live fire practice.
Today the site is scattered across the moor, its concrete foundations and earthworks gradually being reclaimed by heather and grass. It stands as a reminder of how Dartmoor's landscape has served military purposes, and of the engineering solutions devised to train gunners on challenging ground. The remains are accessible to walkers, though they require some care to locate and interpret.
