Observation Post 3 stands just north of the range's "E" datum point, on the ground above Curtery Clitters. It is the only observation post on the Okehampton Range with a timber frame: thick timber posts and beams, with timber wall cladding. The roof and outer walls are a mixture of concrete and dry-stone granite blocks, and the whole building is covered with a thin layer of earth and turf, so from a distance it looks like a low grassy mound. A half-height reinforced concrete blast wall with a handrail runs along the front.
It is complete but now boarded up. It is one of only seven of the range's twenty-two numbered posts still standing; the posts around it, OP 2 on Bog Hill and OP 4 by Black-a-ven Brook, have been demolished.
The post is inside the Okehampton live-firing area. Check the firing programme and the flags before you go, and keep out when firing is on. The other posts, and the history of the range, are on the Okehampton Range page.
