Gibbet Hill

Gibbet Hill sits just west of the A386 as it heads north from Mary Tavy, with Wheal Betsy mine on its lower eastern slopes. The name comes from its grim history: in the 1700s, highwaymen like Captain Jack were displayed here on a gibbet, either caged or tied to a post, as a warning to those using the road below. The hill itself holds tin mine shafts from its industrial past. From the trig point at 353 metres you get wide views across the moor, with Brent Tor and its church prominent to the south west, and Cox Tor, Standon Hill and the Willsworthy firing range visible to the east. It's an easy walk from the A386 parking spots.
