Gibbet Hill

Set on Dartmoor in 1817, Gibbet Hill follows Jonas Lyddon, described by his creator as a "rebel and revolutionary," on his return to a land of poverty, the enclosure of common grazing land, and demobilised soldiers turned highwaymen after the defeat of Napoleon. A standalone prequel, complete in itself, to John Bainbridge's William Quest Victorian mystery thrillers.

The novel's Kitty Jay, one of two sisters seeking "love and belonging" amid a "cruel society that has cast them aside," shares her name with the real Dartmoor folklore figure remembered at Kitty Jay's Grave.

The hill of the title is a real Dartmoor landmark near Mary Tavy, once used to display the bodies of executed highwaymen.
