Wheal Betsy

Kingsett, Tavistock, Devon

Grid ref: SX 5101 8138

Wheal Betsy is one of Dartmoor's most striking industrial ruins, its stone engine house rising prominently from the moorland near Mary Tavy. Built in the 19th century during the tin mining boom, the mine once drove the local economy, and the substantial remains of its machinery and structures still command the landscape today.

Walking out to the site across open moorland gives a genuine sense of how isolated and harsh mining life must have been. The enginehouse's weathered walls and stark silhouette against the sky tell a story of ambition, industry, and the relentless extraction of resources from beneath the moor. It's a sobering reminder of how thoroughly Dartmoor's uplands were transformed by human enterprise.
