Hut circle near Cawsand Beacon

This stone hut circle is one of a scattered group of prehistoric dwellings that once occupied this part of Dartmoor. Built from local stone without mortar, the circular foundation would have supported a timber-framed roof, providing shelter for Bronze Age families working the moorland landscape. The hut stands as evidence of long-term settlement and land use during a period when Dartmoor supported a much larger population than it does today.

Visiting the site means walking out onto the open moor to find the low stone walls and rubble that mark the structure. The wider settlement context is evident from other hut circles nearby. This is archaeology set within the living moorland landscape, a quiet record of how people adapted to and shaped Dartmoor over three thousand years ago.
