Buckland Common enclosed hut circle settlement

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1004589) describes an enclosed stone hut circle settlement near the crest of a low ridge around Ruddycleave Water, on the edge of Buckland Common. It lies within the Rippon Tor coaxial field system. The settlement is a series of eight joined enclosures of different sizes and shapes, divided by a reave and a cross reave, with substantial walls up to 1.2 metres high. Inside the enclosures the ground is relatively free of stone and there are lynchets, which show it was once cultivated. It lies in the parish of Buckland in the Moor, about 2.1 km south of Pil Tor and 1.4 km north-east of Buckland in the Moor.

Four stone hut circles survive, with substantial walls of coursed rubble and upright stones up to 1.5 metres wide and 1 metre high, and inner diameters from 6.7 to 9.5 metres. Two are built into enclosure walls and the other two stand free. Other remains nearby are outside this scheduling because they have not been formally assessed.
