Coaxial fields, Halshanger

Grid ref: SX 7527 7481

Halshanger and Horridge Commons preserve a complex Bronze Age landscape of coaxial fields, the geometric field boundaries that characterise Dartmoor's prehistoric farming. Within this system lie the remains of ancient settlements and burial cairns, marking centuries of pastoral life on the high moor.

The Rippon Tor coaxial field system extends across this terrain, forming part of a wider pattern of land division and occupation visible across Dartmoor. Walking here, you encounter the bones of an ancient pastoral economy: straight-edged fields, settlement platforms and stone monuments scattered across open moorland much as they were left thousands of years ago.
