Black Tor, Walkhampton

Princetown, Yelverton, Devon

Grid ref: SX 5733 7178

Part of Princetown →

  • Parish: Walkhampton
  • Height: 376 m
  • Grid reference: SX 5735 7177
  • Rock: Granite

This Black Tor is a granite tor of 376 m in Walkhampton parish, standing above the west bank of the River Meavy and close to the B3212, so it is easy to reach from the roadside parking. It has two main outcrops. From the road it looks modest, but it seems far more imposing from Hart Tor or from its own steep slope.

It is best known for its logan stone, a large granite knob perched on the higher outcrop. A logan stone is a balanced rock that can be rocked by hand; this one moves easily from its east side and holds a large pear-shaped rock basin on top. Eric Hemery noted that the two rock piles are weathered along their joints much like Great Hound Tor near Bovey, and that a climbable rock chimney runs up the inside of the tor.

In a small combe beside the river below the tor are Black Tor Falls, a much-photographed spot, and the remains of a blowing house, an old tin smelting house. The numerals XIII are cut into its lintel.

Of Dartmoor's four Black Tors this is the one on the River Meavy. The others are above the West Okement near Okehampton, above Shipley Bridge at South Brent, and near Butterdon Hill at Ugborough.
