Three round cairns near Black Tor

These three round cairns sit on open moorland south west of Black Tor, among the extensive prehistoric monuments scattered across Dartmoor. They date from the Bronze Age, when communities built burial cairns and ritual structures across the high moor. The cairns are small by comparison with some Dartmoor examples, but they form part of the wider pattern of settlement and land use that shaped the moorland landscape thousands of years ago.

Today the site lies in rough moorland typical of central Dartmoor. The cairns themselves are low stone structures, visible as stony mounds in the grass and heather. Visiting requires cross-country walking across open moor and careful navigation, but the location offers insight into how the Bronze Age inhabitants used and marked this landscape.
