Black Tor
Devon
Black Tor is a small granite outcrop sitting on the open moorland of central Dartmoor. Its name and dark stone are characteristic of many of Dartmoor's tors, though it lacks the dramatic prominence of the moor's highest peaks. The tor offers the kind of views that reward a moorland walk: wide, rolling horizons across granite-strewn slopes and distant ridges.
The approach is typical Dartmoor walking, crossing heather and grass without formal paths. The tor's modest height makes it accessible, yet its position on the high plateau means you feel removed from the settled valleys below. It is a good waypoint on longer moorland walks, a place to pause and take in the scale of the granite landscape.
