The Hunters' Stone is a large rectangular granite boulder beside the road to the Avon Dam, between the ruined Brent Moor House and Shipley Bridge in South Brent parish. Names and initials are cut into its faces, among them Trelawny, Bulteel, Carew and Paul Treby, with the initials M.H.-D.D. John Lloyd Warden Page described the carved stone in 1892, the earliest known reference, and William Crossing (1909) wrote that it commemorates several distinguished members of the South Devon Hunt.
Crossing credited its setting up to Christopher Arthur Mohun Harris. Eric Hemery gave 1948 as the date of carving, but Max Piper later found the earlier references and Tim Jenkinson corrected the error in 2020. The error still appears in some books. More names have been added over time, and one inscription has been added since March 2023.
Do not confuse it with Hunter's Tor. There are two tors of that name, one in the Teign Gorge (listing 3842) and one above Lustleigh Cleave (listing 3841). Hunters' Stone is a boulder only. It lies a short way below Black Tor at Brent Down (listing 3778).
