Stanlake hut circle settlement and medieval longhouses

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1011170) describes an unenclosed hut circle settlement with an irregular field system, a D-shaped enclosure holding two huts, two longhouses, a medieval strip field system and post-medieval field boundaries, on a gentle south-facing slope above the valley of the River Meavy. The post-medieval farm is Stanlake, at SX 5695 7090. It lies in the parish of Walkhampton, about 0.9 km south-east of Leeden Tor and 3.1 km south-west of Princetown.

Of the 33 hut circles, 32 are circular, 2 to 8.4 metres across inside, and one is oval, 4.5 by 2.4 metres. The walls are 0.3 to 0.9 metres high, averaging 0.59 metres. Twelve huts have visible doorways, one is conjoined with another and 23 are attached to boundary walls of the same date. The field system has 15 plots bounded by rubble walls averaging 1.4 metres wide and 0.4 metres high, many of them lyncheted, and 29 of the huts lie within it. North of it a small D-shaped enclosure, 41 by 28 metres inside, holds two huts, with a rubble wall up to 3.5 metres wide.

Two medieval longhouses and a strip field system lie inside the area of the earlier fields. The northern longhouse is terraced into the slope, rectangular, 12 by 3 metres inside, with rubble walls including some large upright stones. The southern longhouse is 15 by 5.3 metres inside and is attached to a strip-field boundary. The strip fields, two long plots bounded by three parallel banks 1.2 metres wide, cover 2 hectares, and huts near the longhouses may have been reused for storage. The post-medieval fields have drystone walls up to 1.8 metres high, and an irregular pound 55 by 38 metres and a rebuilt hut circle belong to the same period.
