Black Hill

Black Hill is a flat, boggy summit of 584 m in the middle of the Okehampton range on north Dartmoor, a little east of Cranmere Pool. It is not the Black Hill at Haytor, which is a short walk from a car park on the east side of the moor.

The top is hard to pick out among peat hags and long grass, and a small cairn of white stones marks it, much like the one on nearby Whitehorse Hill. The Taw, the East Dart and the West Okement all begin in boggy ground to the north and east, and Black Ridge Brook lies to the west.

Because the ground around the summit is flat, the views are wide rather than dramatic. The best look south to Cut Hill and Fur Tor, and High Willhays and Yes Tor show to the north. It is a few hours on foot from the nearest car, inside a live firing range, so check range times and red flags before setting out.
