South-eastern of two cairns, Eylesbarrow

Eylesbarrow holds two cairns, both likely dating from the Bronze Age. This south-eastern example sits in the characteristic landscape of Dartmoor's higher ground, where such monuments are scattered across the granite uplands. The cairn itself is a stone burial mound, built by people who lived on and worked the moor thousands of years ago.

Today it appears as a heap of stones, weathered and partially turf-covered, marking a burial or ritual site of the prehistoric Dartmoor community. Visiting requires walking across open moorland, which gives a real sense of the environment these people inhabited and the permanence they sought to give their monuments.
