Standon Hill

Standon Hill rises from the western edge of Dartmoor as a bulky, rounded hill whose name comes from the Cornish words for stony. The summit is mostly grass and flat, but dotted with low granite outcrops and loose boulders that suggest an older tor broken down over time. Two military range huts sit here, as the hill borders both the Merrivale and Willsworthy firing ranges. The highest outcrop contains a ring cairn, and a natural alignment of four boulders ascends eastward from the hilltop. The approach is steep from most directions, though easier from Lynch Tor to the south. Views reach south to Great Mis Tor and Roos Tor, west toward Cornwall, and north to Hare Tor.
