Vixen Tor

Grid ref: SX 5421 7424

Vixen Tor, also called the Egyptian Sphinx or the Sphinx Rock, stands as one of the most visually distinctive tors on Dartmoor. At around 300 metres high in South Dartmoor, it sits on private land and has been inaccessible to the public since 2003 when the landowner closed all rights of way to the area. The closure followed a long history of visitor damage, litter and broken bottles at the site, issues documented back to 1932. Despite efforts by groups including the Ramblers and the British Mountaineering Council to restore access under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act, the tor remains off limits, leaving it isolated from the many visitors who enjoy its neighbouring tors.
