The Magic Mist, and other Dartmoor Legends

The Magic Mist, and other Dartmoor Legends is a collection of eleven stories by Eva C. Rogers, published for Christmas 1900 by Andrew Melrose of London, with James G. Commin of Exeter, and usually catalogued as 1901. It carries a Prefatory Note by Robert Burnard and drawings by Charles E. Eldred and P. B. Hickling. The book itself prints no date.

The stories: The Magic Mist; The Vengeance of Belus; The Bards of the Wood of Wistman; The Story of the Spinners' Rock; The Golden Maze; The Legend of the Grey Wethers; The Nymph Tamara; The Wrath of Taranis; The Pixies of Ockington Wood; The Legend of the Abbot's Way; The Legend of Guile Bridge.

Several of the legends are Eva Rogers's own inventions, among them Vixana, the witch of Vixen Tor, and the singer Essára, who in “The Bards of the Wood of Wistman” becomes the origin of the standing stone Beardown Man. The article Looking for Eva follows them as they spread.

Later reissues keep the text but drop the full title: Dartmoor Legends from the Pilgrim Press (about 1912 to 1930, the date disputed), and print-on-demand reprints from 2006, one of which prints the author as Eva C. Roberts. This listing is the 1900 original under its own title.
