Headland Warren boundary stones, Birch Tor

On walking routes: Two Moors Way
Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1021342) describes two warren boundary stones on a gentle east-facing slope of Birch Tor, with views over much of central Dartmoor. The scheduling falls into two areas. The southern is a granite pillar 0.7 metres high with WB cut on its north face, and the northern is 0.9 metres high with WB cut on its south-west face. They are part of a group of at least 16 stones that mark the edges of Headland Warren. The warren covers about 246 hectares and has at least 37 pillow mounds, five vermin traps, six rectangular enclosures and the warren house. It was certainly in use by 1754 and stayed in use until about 1920. It lies in the parish of North Bovey, about 1.2 km north-west of Hookney Tor and 2.3 km north of Challacombe.
