Birch Tor

Birch Tor is a distinctive outcrop that divides naturally into two sections. The southern pile sits on a granite base and overlooks centuries of tin mining that has carved dark gullies into the hillside, most notably the Vitifer Mine, which worked until 1925. The northern section shows contrasting geology with irregular joint patterns. From here you can see Birch Tor Barrow, a prehistoric tumulus, and a Warren Boundstone marking the edge of the old Headland Warren. It is an easy walk from the B3212 road near Bennett's Cross, with good views south to central Dartmoor.
