This scheduled monument is the remains of a medieval rabbit warren, situated on open moorland west of Beardown Farm. Rabbit warrens were an important medieval resource, managed to provide meat and fur for local communities and lords. The site itself may show earthwork traces of the warren's structure, though the landscape has changed considerably since it was in use.
The warren sits within Dartmoor's extensive archaeological record, part of a pattern of medieval and later settlement and resource management across the moor. Walking in this area, you are moving through land that was carefully exploited and organised centuries ago, long before the moor took on its present appearance.
