Pillow mound at the top of Legis Tor

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1008715) describes a pillow mound near the summit of Legis Tor, overlooking the valley of the River Plym. It is a flat-topped, oblong mound of soil and stone, 16.5 metres long, 4.3 metres wide and 0.7 metres high, with a ditch 1.6 metres wide and 0.3 metres deep on all four sides, from which the material was dug. The long sides are crudely faced with drystone walling, and a clear shallow gully runs south for 4 metres from the lower end. Gullies like this have long been read as drainage ditches, but they may also have been the preferred routes for rabbits and vermin. Traps set in them could have been used to control both. It lies in the parish of Sheepstor, about 1.1 km north-west of Little Trowlesworthy Tor and 2.4 km south-east of Sheepstor.

It is part of the rabbit warren at Legis Tor, sometimes called New Warren, which may have run jointly with Trowlesworthy Warren until it became an outlier of Ditsworthy Warren. The name New Warren strongly suggests there was an older warren on the site. The warren is hard to date because there are no early documents, though it is generally accepted that the warren across the Plym at Trowlesworthy existed by 1292. Fences and fence posts are not part of the scheduling.
