Pillow mound 180m west of Legis Tor forming part of Legistor Warren

This pillow mound is an artificial earthwork formed to create habitat for rabbits, a valuable medieval resource on Dartmoor. Part of Legistor Warren, a larger managed landscape for rabbit breeding, the mound would once have provided dry ground for burrows. The warren system reflects how the moor was actively managed for food production in medieval and later centuries.
Today the pillow mound survives as a low ridge in the moorland west of Legis Tor. Its position in the open landscape and modest scale are typical of Dartmoor's warren systems. Walking across this ground, you can trace how people shaped the moor for practical purposes over centuries, leaving marks still visible on the moorland surface.
