Pillow mound near Legis Tor

Pillow mounds are low, elongated earthworks created to manage rabbit warrens, a form of livestock farming that was common across medieval and post-medieval England. At Legistor Warren, south west of Legis Tor, this scheduled monument is part of a larger warren system where rabbits were kept and harvested for meat and fur. The mound itself sits in the open moorland landscape that characterises this part of Dartmoor.

Today, the pillow mound survives as a subtle earthwork, best appreciated by those familiar with reading the moor's archaeology. Its presence here speaks to the ways in which Dartmoor was managed and exploited over centuries, before the landscape became valued primarily for its wilderness and wildness.
