Crockern Tor

Two Bridges, Devon

Grid ref: SX 6156 7578

Part of Two Bridges →

Crockern Tor rises from the open moorland of central Dartmoor as a modest but distinctive granite outcrop. The ascent is straightforward, rewarding walkers with expansive views across the high moor in all directions, a landscape of bog, heather, and distant tors that feels genuinely remote despite Dartmoor's accessibility.

The tor's significance extends beyond its views. This was the meeting place of the Dartmoor Forest Court, where medieval tin miners gathered to settle disputes and regulate their work. Standing here, you're in a place where centuries of Dartmoor's human story intersected with the moor's unforgiving terrain. The wind and vast sky make the historical weight tangible.
