Old Crockern

The popular version goes like this: Old Crockern is a genius loci, a spirit or tutelary being who watches over Crockern Tor and the tinning grounds nearby. He was invoked by medieval tinners when they gathered to settle disputes and make laws, and his name appears in old tin-working documents as a kind of supernatural arbitrator or witness. The story feels genuinely old, which is why it tends to get retold with confidence.

But here is where it gets honest. I cannot find a manuscript myself, and the written trail is thinner than the legend's age might suggest. Legendary Dartmoor by Theo Brown covers the story, but I have not traced the primary sources back to their root with my own eyes. What I know is that Old Crockern exists in folklore memory and in at least one academic source, but the exact provenance, the original documents, and how far back the oral tradition really goes are not things I can pin down from an armchair. If you are curious about the tinning courts and their actual records, that is a proper research question for the Devon Record Office or a local history group; they may have better answers than I do.
