Pillow mound 450m west of Hen Tor

This pillow mound is part of Hentor Warren, one of many artificial rabbit warrens established on Dartmoor during the medieval period and beyond. The mound itself, roughly rectangular and raised above the surrounding ground, would have provided a dwelling place and breeding ground for rabbits kept as a valued food source and commodity. Such warrens were carefully managed landscapes, integral to the economy of Dartmoor estates.

Today the mound remains visible in the moorland west of Hen Tor, a small but telling remnant of how people shaped Dartmoor's hills for their own purposes. Walking here, you move through layers of Dartmoor's working history: the tor itself, the warren earthworks, and the wider sweep of moorland that continues to define this landscape.
