Cowsic River
Dartmoor Forest, Devon
The Cowsic River is a short tributary of the West Dart, around four and a half miles long. It rises in wet, remote ground near Devil's Tor and the Beardown Man standing stone on the northern plateau, close to the sources of several of Dartmoor's rivers.
From there it runs almost due south down a steep, partly wooded valley to the west of the Beardown Tors, before joining the West Dart at Two Bridges. The name Two Bridges is thought to come from the days when the old road needed separate crossings over both the West Dart and the Cowsic, just above the point where they meet.
