Huntingdon Warren hut circle settlement

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1004587) describes a partly enclosed stone hut circle settlement with a cairn, a warrener's shelter and pillow mounds on the lower south-facing slope of Huntingdon Warren, in the Avon valley. The scheduling falls in two areas. The settlement is three separate, massively built pounds of varying size, with walls up to 3 metres wide and over 1 metre high, all containing stone hut circles, and a further seven huts lie outside them. It lies in the parish of Dartmoor Forest.

There are up to 24 hut circles in all, from 2.2 to 7.2 metres across inside. Seventeen are enclosed and twelve of those are attached to enclosure walls, and a drainage ditch cuts one enclosure. To the south-west is an oval cairn 5 metres by 4.7 metres and 1.2 metres high. To the north-east a warrener's shelter survives as a three-sided structure with walls up to 0.7 metres wide and 1.1 metres high. Up to five pillow mounds, low rectangular mounds, are scattered through the settlement, two inside different enclosures and the rest outside. The shelter and the pillow mounds belong to the large Huntingdon Warren. Other remains nearby, some scheduled and some not, are outside this scheduling.
